01/ 2012 New release: Canal Pop, High Class Girls & Lo Fi Boys
Catchy electropop with ironic lyrics and carefully crafted vocal arrangements. That is, more or less, the definition of Canal Pop's music given by Emiliano Canal, the man behind the project. And the 4-tracks EP High Class Girls & Lo Fi Boys is the proof that the definition still applies.
"Contrary to what people may think, catchy pop music is very difficult to make, because you have to combine a few very effective elements in a very little time, and everything has to fit perfectly. Anyone can make an experimental 15 minutes ode full of chords and strange noises, the difficult think is to make people dance in 3 minutes", says Emiliano about his songs. Maybe he knows what he talks about, since he's the owner/ director of Eternal Sunday, a label specialized in releasing Argentinean artists who sing in English, and that job forces him to listen dozens of new bands and songs every week.

"I love to own a label but the cons are that it takes time away from my own musical projects like Canal Pop. The label forces you to think and work in a different way, especially about marketing and airplay, and it becomes difficult to sit at the studio to mix a song or to simply try new music ideas at the keyboard. It's like owning a football team and wanting to go to kick a corner shot at the same time, it is not very practical." Maybe because of this High Class Girls & Lo Fi Boys is a 4-tracks EP. "To record and finish a complete album was taking too much time for me, and it's not that important nowadays since people consumes music in a different way. I think it's better to have an EP with four solid songs and not a 15-tracks album with ten fillers".
After a first listen, the four songs in High Class Girls & Lo Fi Boys seem to be solid enough. "Two Of A Kind" opens, a story with a somehow erotic innuendo and sexy plays of words ("we're two of a kind, 'cause you've got a sexy body and I have a dirty mind"). "A Place" follows, based on a true story, a song that describes a confused girl who doesn't know if she likes girls or boys. "I went out with some friends and a pretty girl came to say hi and when asked how was everything she said not very good, because I don't know if I like girls or boys", Emiliano remembers. This song has a lot of fans, and I suppose it is because it's about being young, not knowing what you want, being afraid of showing yourself the way you are, wanting to go far away, and all the issues of sexual ambiguity, of not matching a certain social ideal. The third song is "Electricity", a song that was chosen in 2011 (among thousands) to be part of the Face The Beat compilation, released by the portal/ magazine Side Line, from Belgium, property of the owners of Alfa Matrix, the most important electro/ industrial/ EBM label in the world. "All the classic electropop band have a song called 'Electricity' and I didn't want to be exception", explains Emiliano. "Of course I tried to give it a sexier connotation ('plug your love into me') because I like to make those plays of words. I think it worked, because the people from Side Line liked it and they have more than a thousand tracks to choose from for their compilation". The EP closes with "For Falling (In Love)", a song that Canal Pop recorded a few times before but was never released. "The chorus simply came to my head. I was in my apartment and heard on my head the 'Oh eh oh, this is a night for falling in love'. I sat at the keyboard and noticed that the musical phrase had a 2/4 bar that complicated everything, but the melody was so catchy that I wrote the rest of the song. I needed to record several versions to be satisfied, when you have a very catchy idea everything you add on top of it tends to interfere".
As Canal Pop, Emiliano Canal works alone ("I deal with enough musicians as a label owner"), so all the keyboards, the production and the arrangements are his. The exception are the voices, Canal Pop has collaborated with very interesting female singers like Gaby Laguzzi (We Never Play Live In Buenos Aires, 2007), Bea Conenna, born in New York (Ecstatic Days single, 2008), sexy Lara Sambert who later appeared on prime time Argentinean TV show Cantando Por Un Sueño, the equivalent of Singing With The Stars, and who toured Greek and Turkey) (An Electro Tribute To Oasis, 2010) and this time Paula Varela AKA Polette, one of Buenos Aires' top singers and sessionist who shared stages with Shakira, Deep Purple and countless other local stars. "Polette is, by far, the best singer I worked with. It is not only about singing nice, but about understanding what the producer and the song need, and Polette has an unique quality, she sings my songs in a nasal, Kylie Minogue way, after that she goes to a jazz club to sing jazz or funk like a diva and then she records a jingle for a canned soup, and she does everything right. That's why everyone calls her, it is an honor to work with her". As in every Canal Pop release, the vocal arrangements are very precise and elaborated, with crystal clear backing vocals coming and going, with little delays and echoes here and there (only noticed with headphones and the traditional robot-like vocoder and lo fi vocals. Canal Pop is back.

Electropop pegadizo con letras irónicas (en inglés) y arreglos vocales cuidados. Palabras más o menos esa es la definición de la música de Canal Pop que da Emiliano Canal, el hombre detrás del proyecto. Y el EP de 4 temas High Class Girls & Lo Fi Boys es una prueba de que la fórmula sigue vigente.
"Contrariamente a lo que la gente puede pensar, la música pop pegadiza es la más difícil de hacer, porque hay que combinar elementos muy efectivos en muy poco tiempo y todo tiene que funcionar perfectamente. Cualquiera hace una oda experimental llena de acordes y de ruidos raros que dure 15 minutos, lo difícil es hacer bailar a la gente en 3", comenta Emiliano cuando habla de sus canciones. Quizás sepa de lo que habla, ya que su actividad paralela (¿principal?) es la de ser el dueño/ director del sello Eternal Sunday, sello especializado en lanzar artistas argentinos con material en inglés, oficio que le demanda escuchar docenas de bandas y canciones nuevas por semana.

"Tener un sello me encanta pero tiene la contra de que le resta mucho tiempo y energías a mis propios proyectos puramente musicales como Canal Pop. El sello te obliga a trabajar y a pensar de otra forma, sobre todo en las cuestiones de márketing y difusión, y cuesta ponerse a terminar una mezcla o a probar ideas en el teclado. Tener un sello y querer ser artista es como ser directivo de un club y querer ir a cabecear un córner, es poco práctico". Quizás por eso High Class Girls & Lo Fi Boys es un EP de 4 tracks. "Grabar y terminar un álbum completo me estaba llevando demasiado tiempo, y hoy la gente consume música de otra manera, es preferible tener un EP de cuatro canciones sólidas y no un álbum de quince tracks de los cuales diez son relleno".
A primera escucha, las cuatro canciones de High Class Girls & Lo Fi Boys parecen ser suficientemente sólidas. Abre "Two Of A Kind", una historia con insinuaciones eróticas y juegos de palabras sexys ("we're two of a kind, 'cause you've got a sexy body and I have a dirty mind"/ somos tal para cual, porque tenés un cuerpo sexy y yo tengo una mente sucia). Sigue "A Place", una historia basada en un hecho real, que describe a una chica confundida que no sabe si le gustan los chicos o las chicas. "Salí con un grupo de amigos y una chica bastante linda vino a saludar alguien y cuando le preguntaron cómo estaba dijo mal, porque no sé si me gustan los chicos o las chicas", recuerda Emiliano Canal. "Esta canción siempre gustó, supongo que porque habla de cosas como el de ser joven, no tener claro lo que se quiere, tener miedo de mostrarse como uno es, de querer irte lejos y toda la cuestión de la ambigüedad sexual, de no encajar en un molde social predeterminado". El tercer tema es "Electricity", canción que fue elegida (entre miles de postulantes) en 2011 para ser parte de la compilación Face The Beat lanzada por la revista/ portal Side Line, de Bélgica, de los dueños de Alfa Matrix, el sello electro/ industrial/ EBM más importante del mundo. "Todas las bandas electropop clásicas tienen un tema llamado 'Electricity' y no quise ser la excepción", explica Emiliano. "Por supuesto, me tomé el atrevimiento de darle una connotación más sexy en la letra ('plug your love into me', enchufame tu amor) porque es lo que me gusta hacer, tomar un tema cualquiera y darle un doble sentido. Creo que quedó bien, porque a la gente de Side Line les gustó, y tenían miles de canciones de todo el mundo para elegir para la compilación". El EP cierra con la híper pegadiza "For Falling (In Love)", una canción que Canal Pop ya había grabado pero nunca lanzado. "El estribillo me vino de repente, estaba en mi departamento un día y escuché en mi cabeza el 'Oh eh oh, this is a night for falling in love'. Me senté al teclado y noté que la frase tenía un compás de 2/4 que complicaba todo, pero la melodía era tan pegadiza que compuse el resto del tema. Tuve que grabar varias versiones para estar medianamente satisfecho, cuando aparece una idea muy pegadiza y muy sólida todo lo que uno tiende a meter la ensucia".
Como Canal Pop, Emiliano Canal trabaja solo ("ya trato con suficientes músicos como dueño de un sello"), por lo que todos los teclados, la producción y los arreglos son suyos. La excepción son las voces. Canal Pop ha colaborado con cantantes (femeninas) muy interesantes como Gaby Laguzzi (We Never Play Live In Buenos Aires, 2007), Bea Conenna, nacida en Nueva York (Ecstatic Days single, 2008), la sensual Lara Sambert (luego participante del programa de TV Cantando Por Un Sueño y con giras a Grecia y Turquía) (An Electro Tribute To Oasis, 2010) y esta vez es el turno de Paula Varela AKA Polette, multifacética cantante y sesionista de Buenos Aires que ha compartido escenarios con Shakira, Deep Purple e incontables estrellas locales. "Polette es la mejor cantante con la que he trabajado, por lejos. No se trata sólo de tener una bonita voz sino de interpretar lo que el productor y la canción están pidiendo, y Polette tiene una ductilidad única, canta mis temas con una voz algo nasal a lo Kylie Minogue y después sale y va a un club a cantar jazz y funk como una diva y después termina el día grabando un jingle de sopas instantáneas, y hace todo bien. Por algo trabaja con los mejores y la llaman siempre. Es un honor grabar con ella", confiesa Emiliano. Como en todos los lanzamientos de Canal Pop, los arreglos vocales son elaborados, prolijos, con coros cristalinos entrando y saliendo todo el tiempo, con pequeños ecos y delays que se aprecian sólo con auriculares, y no faltan ni los ocasionales vocoders robotizados ni las voces low fi. Canal Pop está de regreso.

11/ 2011 New release: ES 2233 Conspiracy Against Truth - Conspiracy Against Truth
There was a time that those who played rock and roll thought about using music to express emotions and not about marketing strategies. Rock meant youth, rebellion, nonconformity, an out of control libido and, above all, honesty. To tell directly what we think, what we feel, using our own words, at all volume and not caring about the consequences. The name of the ganre changed (rock, hard rock, heavy, punk, grunge) but the music was the same, the archetype was the same, the message was yet the same, always simple, direct, al all volume and brutally honest.
If that's the definition of rock, then rock and roll is back. Taken by the hand by a band from Argentina known as CAT, which means Conspiracy Against Truth. A curious name for a band that is not afraid of telling its truth.
Conspiracy Against Truth was formed in 2008 outside of Buenos Aires, their home city. It was formed in sunny San Francisco, California, USA, when the now members of CAT went on a tour as part of other band ("a forgettable one" they claim) that broke up there. In San Francisco they experienced first hand the free spirit of Californian rock, a combination of freedom, tolerance, honesty, musical purity and above all, professionalism (California is, after all, the world capital of entertainment). That trip, that served as an initiation, lasted several months and when the bandmembers returned to Buenos Aires they had an idea in mind, that turned into a mission: to start a band in Argentina representing the spirit they found in San Francisco. It was going to be real rock and roll, simple, direct, brutal, honest and professional.
Almost three years passed, and the proof that they made it is on the table. Eternal Sunday, the Argentinean label specialized in releasing local music in English, presents Conspiracy Against Truth's debut album, called simply as the band. Conspiracy Against Truth contains 10 powerful tracks, pure adrenaline. The album begins with the furious rock of "Sixx", moves to the more radio-oriented "Shine" that it's replaced by the acoustic guitars of "Could Have Been" and goes to the mid tempo "Lights Out", that seems to be a ballad until the distorted guitars break into the chorus. "Welcome Back" has a longer intro and seems to talk about what the band found when they came back from California. "Feel The Heat" has a nonchalantly quality that makes the listener wonder if it was written on a beach. Then the love song comes (if it can be called like this), "Senior High (The Girl Of The Year)", about a girl that seems to think she's very important. It is followed by "Anger And Hate", about rock favorite emotions, "Rabbit Skin", with its classic guitar riffs and finally "Slide", that with its six minutes and a half repeats as a mantra the verse "we're going nowhere". Repetition that, at this stage of the album, efficiently transmits the kind of emotions and the perception of the world experimented by any young rocker of any age, no matters if from sunny San Francisco or from humid Buenos Aires. Conspiracy Against Truth is an album that makes you feel suffocated and amazed, that it's delicate at the same time that it's brutal and distorted, naïve as the album cover colours and deep in its conception, that makes us free by showing us the bars of the prisons we make for ourselves.
Band influences? The ones that are expected. Classic hard rock from the 70's like AC/ DC and Led Zeppelin, grunge/ alternative from the 90's (Nirvana, Faith No More, Rage Against The Machine, Foo Fighters), a little electronic touch like Nine Inch Nails, all filtered through the spirit of punk rock from California, with a Hollywood professionalism. Made in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to shout from the south what the world is afraid to tell.

Hubo una época en la los que hacían rock and roll pensaban más en expresar emociones a través de la música que en preparar estrategias de márketing aptas para todo público. El rock se asociaba con la juventud, la rebeldía, el inconformismo, la libido descontrolada y, sobre todo, la honestidad. Decir en la cara de los demás lo que se piensa, lo que se siente, lo que se vive, enunciado con las propias palabras y a todo volumen sin importar las consecuencias. El nombre del género fue variando (rock, hard rock, heavy, punk, grunge), pero la música era la misma, el arquetipo era el mismo, el mensaje era el mismo, siempre simple, directo, a todo volumen y honestamente brutal.
Si esa es la definición de rock, el rock and roll está de regreso. De la mano de una banda argentina cuyas iniciales CAT son la abreviatura de Conspiracy Against Truth. Curioso nombre ("conspiración contra la verdad") para una banda que no se calla nada.
Conspiracy Against Truth se formó en 2008, lejos de Buenos Aires, la ciudad donde luego desarrollarían su carrera. Se formó en la soleada San Francisco, en California, Estados Unidos cuando los ahora miembros de CAT fueron de gira con otra banda local ("olvidable", comentan) que se disolvió a poco de llegar. En San Francisco experimentaron de primera mano el espíritu libre del rock californiano, que combina a la vez la libertad, la tolerancia, la honestidad y la pureza musical con el profesionalismo (California es, después de todo, la capital mundial del entretenimiento). Luego de ese viaje iniciático de varios meses los ahora CAT regresaron a la mucho más melancólica y formal Buenos Aires con una idea convertida en misión: crear la banda de rock argentina que representara el espíritu que habían mamado en San Francisco. Iba a ser una banda que expresara los ideales aprendidos en San Francisco: rockera de verdad, simple, directa, brutal, honesta y no por eso poco profesional.
Pasaron casi tres años y sobre la mesa está la prueba de que lograron lo que se habían propuesto. Eternal Sunday, el sello argentino especializado en música local en inglés, presenta el álbum debut de Conspiracy Against Truth, llamado simplemente como la banda. Conspiracy Against Truth contiene 10 poderosos tracks que son adrenalina pura. El disco comienza con el rock furioso de "Sixx", pasa por la más radial "Shine", que es reemplazada por las guitarras acústicas de "Could Have Been" y por la mid tempo "Lights Out" que parece ser una balada hasta que entra una oleada de guitarras distorsionadas en el estribillo. "Welcome Back" tiene una intro más larga y parece hablar del mundo que la banda encontró a su regreso de California. "Feel The Heat" tiene una cualidad algo despreocupada que parece que hubiese sido compuesta en una playa. Viene luego la canción de amor (si es que se puede llamar así) "Senior High (The Girl Of The Year)", acerca de una chica que parece creerse demasiado importante. La siguen "Anger And Hate", acerca de las emociones favoritas del rock, "Rabbit Skin" con sus riff de guitarras clásicos e impecables y por último "Slide", que con sus seis minutos y medio repite una y otra vez como un mantra el "we're going nowhere" (no vamos a ningún lado). Repetición que, a esta altura del álbum, transmite eficientemente la clase de emociones, de precepción del mundo que experimenta cualquier joven rockero de cualquier época, en la soleada California o en las húmedas noches de Buenos Aires. Conspiracy Against Truth es un disco que ahoga y que maravilla a la vez, que es prolijo y delicado al mismo tiempo que distorsionado y brutal, naif en los colores de la portada y profundo en su concepción, que nos libera mostrándonos los barrotes de las prisiones que nosotros mismos nos construimos.
¿Las influencias de la banda? Las esperables. Hard rock clásico de los '70, de AC/ DC a Led Zeppelin, pasando por el grunge de los '90 (Nirvana, Faith No More, Rage Against The Machine, Foo Fighters) con un toquecito industrial/ electrónico a lo Nine Inch Nails, todo tamizado por el espíritu del punk rock californiano, con el profesionalismo de Hollywood. Hecho en Buenos Aires, Argentina, para gritar desde el sur lo que el mundo calla.
